The proverbial torch was passed at Feyenoord on Sunday afternoon when 18-year-old forward Dylan Vente scored on his full debut for the Eredivisie club.
Vente scored the second goal in a 7-0 walloping of local rivals Sparta Rotterdam, only his fifth ever appearance of a senior career that began in September.
However, rather than a bog standard ‘youngster scores on debut’ fable, the echoes of time run a little deeper here.
You see, Vente is the great-nephew of former Feyenoord stalwart Leen Vente, who scored the first ever goal at De Kuip when the famous old stadium was officially opened in March, 1937, with a 5-2 win over Belgian side Beerschot Wilrijk.

Leen Vente, 1937Leen Vente is the brother of Dylan’s grandfather, and it would appear that decisive aerial technique runs in the family blood.
The former – also a striker by trade – spent four thoroughly successful seasons at Feyenoord between 1936 and 1940, scoring 65 goals in 82 appearances.
