Finney, who sadly passed away at the age of 91 on Friday evening, was affectionately nicknamed ‘The Preston Plumber’ throughout his football career having famously trained as an apprentice plumber before being signed by North End as a lad in 1946.

Even after ascending to become one of the most famous names in football, Finney continued to supplement his income by changing into his overalls after morning training sessions or before matches on a Saturday and going out on the rounds around Preston, fixing sinks, unblocking toilets and shoring up leaky taps.

By the time he retired from football, he’d managed to build his eponymous business into one of the largest independent plumbing firms in the north-west of England.
